8-26 CUP O' JO

T-h-a-t-s what I'm talkin' about! Konrad went 5-5 yesterday to key a big win for Visalia. Louis was 2-3 in a lopsided win for Lakeland. Jonny blooped a walk off single to get The Bulls' Magic Number down to one game. Way to kick it up a notch guys.

KONRAD SCHMIDT (C, Arizona Diamondbacks Organization - Visalia Oaks, High A)
Woo-dee-hoo! 5 for 5. Visalia pummelled Stockton last night 13-4. Konrad was just a HR short of the cycle, with 3 singles, a double (11), and his first striple at High A. That slugfest boosted his average to .336. Visalia is probably out of the playoff picture, but this article has a nice interview with Konrad and outlines the Oak's playoff chances.

JOEY GOMES - OF, Joliet Jackhammers, Northern League - IND
and
CHAD FILLINGER - P, Joliet Jackhammers, Northern League - IND
Joey and Chad had the night off. If you can call it that after on the heels of a busride from Gary, Indiana to Kansas City, MO. Joliet will need a couple wins in this series to keep their playoff hopes alive. Otherwise, they'll play for pride against the Winnipeg Goldeyes in their final homestand of the season this weekend. Gametime is 7:05 central. You can listen to the game here: http://nmg.player.abacast.com/player/player.php?pid=wjol Just click the play button and enjoy the commercials. I hear 'em in my sleep!

LOUIS OTT (DH/INF Detroit Tigers Organization - Lakeland Flying Tigers, A)
Sweet Lou was 2-3 in Lakeland's 7-1 win over Dunedin last nightBatting .263. Lakeland has been sinking in the standings and are now 4 games out of 2nd place with a week to go.

TOMMY EVERIDGE (1B, Oakland A's Organization - Midland Rockhounds, AA)
The S.I. curse gripped Tommy's bat last night. On the day he was named to the Texas League Post-Season All Star Team, he went 0-3 with 2 Ks and a walk, but Midland beat Frisco last night 6-5 in a big win over the Division Leaders. Midland is now just a game back. The Hounds finish the season with 4 games against the San Antonio Missions who are too close for comfort, and see Frisco again for the last two games of the season. Frisco has an easier go of it facing the last place team the next four days. Rally time Midland.

JONNY GOMES (DH/OF, Tampa Bay Rays Organization - Durham Bulls, AAA)
Jonny won one for The Bulls with a walk off single in the 10th last night. He was 2-4 with a double, an RBI single, a sac fly and a K goosing his average to .236. One more Durham win or Norfolk loss will clinch the title for the Bulls. Durham plays tonight at 7:10 Eastern. Here's Jonny-B-Good. Nice to see him back in the spotlight:

BRANDON MORROW (P, Seattle Mariners)Mariner Chatter:
Brandon pitches tonight against Sacramento. Go get 'em B!
He is on a 5 day rotation and will pitch again on 8-31, the day before the rosters expand. His 72 pitch 10 K outing last Thursday has Seattle fans smiling. Seattle could decide to bring him up before the deadline, but would have to make a roster move so it's more likely he'll rejoin the team in September with the Mariners so far out of it.

MrPTownFan says The Pearls need some spice. Some of his suggestions were spicy alright, but not designed for long term success. Let's try some controversy instead. Here are two juicy topics. PTownFan wonders what you think:

  • 9 year old pitcher deemed "too good to pitch" in New Haven, Conn. I think there's a whole lot more to this story than is being reported. And the devil is probably in the details. And I'll bet the details are about the grownups, not the kids... http://www.contracostatimes.com/sports/ci_10299220?nclick_check=1
  • No More Olympic Baseball? Say It Ain't So! I suppose it's hard for the average American to get excited about watching a team of AA/AAA ballplayers represent the USA in Olympic Baseball competition. I spend more time following MiLB and Independent League ball than the guys with enormou$ ego$ so I'm cool with it, but the PTBs (powers that be) have decided there's not enough bling there, so no baseball in 2012. A very smart guy named Jay has some ideas... lots of them... about how to make baseball work in the Olympics. Check out his post. Think this could work? http://www.letsgotribe.com/2008/8/23/599794/the-all-shoulda-been-olymp

Give PTownFan a shout. It will make her day to know there is someone out there ;-) Don't worry. She doesn't always talk about herself in the third person like The Rickey.
